AIRSOFT for training

Image
Part of what makes airsoft so intriguing is its highly realistic look and feel of actual weaponry without the real potential of death or serious injury. Many of the airsoft pistols and rifles look so much like actual guns that they cannot be identified as toys, except for the bright orange tip that is required by law. This makes airsoft pistols in particular, a great tool for training for men and women in law enforcement. With the comparable dimensions, weight, look and feel of an actual handgun or rifle, the officer in training is getting a great idea of what using the real thing is all about. Due to their close resemblance to actual handguns, officers can holster the airsoft guns just as they would a real one, and can pull and fire just like a real weapon as well. Gas airsoft pistols have the advantage over spring airsoft pistols here because they can actually recoil after firing, just like a real gun. These guns are called blow-back guns, which mirror the recoil of the real ...

Using SPEAR and Highgear Products in training

USING THE " SPEAR andHIGH GEAR" EQUIPMENT FOR TRAINING S/SGT. T. HANNA #36739 FTO T/O "D" DIV. HEADINGLY In August I will be one of the TO's at the combatives training camp being held at Depot Div. for 4 days, along with Sgt. J. Belliveau "E DIV",Cpl. J. Sczyglinski "D DIV", and Sgt. Barry Larrimore "A DIV"., information coming in the June Gazette for all interested. A 3-step drilling recipe that allows you to experience in advance of a real attack the physical ''positional'' variables of a real fight. I refer to this as ''Off-Balance'' training paradigm (in a real fight you are ''off-balance'' psychologically, emotionally and physically). Step 1: Dissect the scenario: identify the Murphy Moments, connect the attack to a realistic pre-contact build up so that your brain mentally blueprints realistic pre-contact use (this helps decrease reaction time) and work this encounter s...

DON'T SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT!!! AVOIDING NEGLIGENT DISCHARGES OF YOUR WEAPON!!

There’s an old saying that goes “There are two kinds of shooters—those who have had negligent discharges, and those who will.” Well, some instructors take exception to this fatalism, claiming that they’ve never had a negligent discharge, and so you shouldn’t either. While I hope that’s true for you, there are also a number of extremely well-regarded instructors who will admit to having had a round come out of the gun that they hadn’t intended. Part of this is simply the law of large numbers: The more you practice, the more rounds you shoot, the greater chance the odds will catch up with you. That’s why we religiously practice the four redundant safety rules that should be burned into our brains by now: Keep your finger off the trigger until you want the gun to discharge; treat all guns as if they were loaded until you have proven to yourself with a redundant protocol that they are not; always keep your gun pointed in the safest possible direction; and know where any bullet coming out o...

OKAY FOLKS!! BACK TO TRAINING!!!! I'M CALLING THIS ONE "COP TALK"

Image
USING YOUR PORTABLE RADIO,CORRECTLY!! As you can see in the photos these officers are using their mics correctly allowing the dominant hand to be free in case a quick grab for your weapon is needed, and they can't be strangled with the cords!!! Tips on how to correctly manipulate your portable radio How many cops carry a portable radio? How many use the extended microphone that attaches somewhere near their head in the epilate? How many police officers talk on the portable radio? I think the answer will be everyone in patrol. My safety tip is how you talk or more correctly manipulate that radio. How many times have you seen an officer right handed or left handed reach across their body with their strong hand and key the microphone to talk, maybe even tilting their head toward the microphone side. They are completely vulnerable during this simple act because the following conditions exist: 1. They have moved their strong had away from their weapon. 2. Their weapon hand is now at the...

THINKING ABOUT GETTING A TASER FOR YOUR WIFE/GIRLFRIEND??? THINK AGAIN!!! Pocket Taser Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife!! Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....?? WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the f...

ONE OF THE BEST IF NOT "THE BEST" EMERGENCY PLANNING AND PREPAREDNESS GUIDES AROUND!!!

It was compiled by The RCMP,FBI,COAST GUARD,HOMELAND SECURITY, THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE,NYPD, and a host of other public safety agencies across the US and CANADA. FILLING OUT A PERFORMANCE EVALUATION REPORT AT 03:00 ON FRESH MEAT!!!

Image
Where did the time go?? It seem's just like yesterday that I took fresh meat ( Cst. George Cook) under my wing to teach him the tools of our trade and here I am finishing up my FTO evaluation report to be turned in to HQ on Monday!! The 8 weeks just seemed to have flown by, must be old age really creeping up on me FAST!!! Did I give him a fair evaluation?? I certainly hope so. What helped me come to some of my conclusions and comments on the review was I thought to myself, " Would I be comfortable sending George out on the road with one of my LEO pals from Blogger or PoliceOne?" I can truly say yes, I would feel comfortable sending him out with any of you guys. Do I feel that he is as street wise and comfortable on patrol as me?? NO!! But I can guarantee you that there is not one TO or FTO that will ever admit that a rookie is as good as they are. I can say however he has come A LONG WAY from being fresh out of the academy and into my grasp. I did put in the evaluation ...

IF YOU ARE FIRST ON SCENE DON'T "F" IT UP!!! MAKE THE CONVICTION STICK!!!!! MORE TIPS FROM " THE OLD GUY"

A police officer can expect to attend any number of crime scenes, from simple break and enters to complex homicides. When an officer is the first to arrive on the scene, his or her approach and subsequent actions can make the difference between a conviction or an acquittal in court. This article offers some guidelines for first responding officers on what should be done at a crime scene to reduce the possibility of losing or destroying evidence, or having it ruled inadmissible in court. First things first: When notified of a crime scene, make sure to record any pertinent information such as who made the call and what was said; the date, time and weather conditions; the circumstances of the complaint; and the location of the incident. This information will help you prepare for your response. Upon arrival, record the time, date, location, persons present, weather conditions and other information from your own observations. Comprehensive notes will be helpful for subsequently providing in...

HAZMAT DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES ( For divers and first responders) Motorcops and Squad Jockey's included!!!

Image
INTRODUCTION TO DECONTAMINATION This article is an introduction to procedures for the decontamination of both divers and tenders exposed to contaminated water in the course of rescue operations. While it is not designed to establish protocols for local and regional teams, it is designed to supply an overview to assist in the establishment of local and regional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). In the course of rescuing both civilian and public safety personnel during in-water operations, divers and their tenders may be exposed to unknown and unseen hazards and dangers. The author therefore recommends that records be maintained on dive time, in-water time, hazards known to exist, and medical data. Decontamination is the process of removing any and all contaminates from the exposed surface areas of dive and support personnel and their equipment. This article will introduce you to the various means of decontaminating personnel and the victims. It is further recommended that a Hazard...

DUMB LAWS THAT ARE STILL ON THE BOOKS

Oh these I had to share, I got such a chuckle when I ran across these, enjoy, it's the weekend and time to be crazy, ( for those of us who are off), and I want to wish my US friends and Brothers and SAFE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!! Florida Women may be fined for falling asleep under a hair dryer, as can the salon owner as well be fined. This was back when it was popular. A special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sunday or she shall risk arrest, fine, and/or jailing. Having sexual relations with a porcupine is illegal. It is illegal to skateboard without a license. You may not release gas (fart) in a public place after 6 P.M. on Thursdays. It is considered an offense to shower naked. You are not allowed to break more than three dishes per day, or chip the edges of more than four cups and/or saucers. P...

CWC ( Concealed Weapons Carry)

Image
YES, THIS IS A PHOTO OF THE TASER POSITION ON MY DUTY BELT, BUT!!, I HAVE A SMALL OF BACK HOLSTER ON ALSO!!! S/Sgt. Tom Hanna #36739 FTO T/O URT WESTMAN OPS "D" DIV" Headingly Detachment Greetings all of my RCMP Brothers. I have been asked to post a short note on concelaed Weapons Carry when we visit the USA, and how HSA 218 affects us as being Canadian LEO's. What what I have been able to interpret and discussing this with Justice in Ottawa this is basically the breakdown of their laws and how it pertains to us: Carrying a lethal weapon in public confers a grave power that carries with it great responsibilities. Those who lawfully engage in the practice realize that. Those who are considering "carrying" need to know what those experienced people know. If You Carry, Always Carry The criminal is the actor, and the armed citizen is the reactor. The typical violent criminal arms himself only when he intends to do something with it. He picks the time...

Somebody asked me about being a Police Diver

Image
I was having a small break today at Nick's Inn with my partner Sizzles when a guy that everyone knows locally came up and asked, " Hey aren't you two on the URT?". And of course I would never miss the opportunity to break into a lengthy conversation about this fact and I sure as hell wasn't going to pass this chance up today..so I replied " Well yes we are, are you in need of our services??", hoping to be able to get off the highway and into DIVE MODE!!!! That was not too be the case though..he started talking about how he just received his open water certification while he was down South this past winter and he'd like to voluneer if needed to dive with us. All knowing Sizzles just gave me one of his look's and shook his head as he knew what was to come next. Seeing I never know what to say, ( Yeah Right!!) I of course started in immediately with the "hey great" I can always use a new set of hands to hoist a decomposing body into a bag...
